Le Labo is pleased to invite you to a talk with video artist and writer Joyce Joumaa on Thursday, April 11 at 6pm.

For Torontonians, you can join us directly at studio 277 from 5:30 pm, and we’ll connect to Zoom at 6 pm to begin the chat. It’ll be a great opportunity to chat over a few mignardises and drinks.

For those who can’t make it, we’re thinking of you! Tune in to Zoom at 6 p.m. Register via Eventbrite to receive the Zoom link.

A few questions we’re already thinking of…

  1. Why these three titles for your film (Remain in the no longer / L’inertie du vide / Comment ne sombrer pas dans le mirage?)?
  2. Can you tell us about your current research into the post-colonial education system in Lebanon and the maritime border conflict with Israel?
  3. In Toronto, almost 50% of the population was born outside the country. In Montreal, the figure is around 30%. How do you feel about living between two countries (Canada and Lebanon)? Do you feel there’s a difference between Toronto and Montreal?

We’re co-presenting Joyce’s latest film, Remain in the no longer, with Images Festival on Friday April 12 at 8pm at Innis Town Hall as part of an evening entitled A city in pursuit, where we’ll be questioning what determines a city’s failure or success.

Joyce Joumaa

Joyce Joumaa is a video artist and writer based between Beirut and Montreal. After growing up in Lebanon, she pursued a BFA in Film Studies at Concordia University. Her work focuses on micro-histories within Lebanon, as a means of understanding how past structures influence the present moment. She is interested in the political charge inscribed in spaces and the social psychology that stems from this tension. Her current research focuses on Lebanon’s post-colonial education system and the maritime border conflict with Israel.

L’inertie du vide / Remain in the no longer / كیف لا نغرق في السراب

Remain in the no longer is an experimental documentary film, drawing on archival material, interviews and 16mm and digital film. It examines the political and cultural forces that have been exerted on the site of the Tripoli International Fair, imagined by architect Oscar Niemeyer – from the interruption of construction to forced abandonment, via attempts at reappropriation.

We warmly thank our partner, Festival Images, for this wonderful opportunity to showcase our work.

We also extend our gratitude to our funders: the Ontario Arts Council, Canadian Heritage, and the Toronto Arts Council.
