FAQ – Frequently asked questions

  1. What do we mean by Francophone or Francophile?

Francophile: a person who has a strong affinity with the French language and/or the history of French-speaking Canada.

Francophone: according to the Government of Ontario’s inclusive definition of Francophone* “people whose mother tongue is French, plus those whose mother tongue is neither French nor English, but who have a special knowledge of French as an official language and use French at home”.

* Ontario’s francophone population is culturally diverse, and includes people from countries all over the French-speaking world. For many francophones, the arts are an essential link between language and cultural identity, and Ontario’s francophone artists are highly valued by their communities. With Francophone individuals and communities dispersed throughout Ontario, Francophone artists and arts organizations can face unique challenges.

2. What is le Labo ?

Le Labo is Toronto’s first and only francophone arts center.
Experimentation, freedom, creation: Le Labo is a center open to all to discover the latest creations of francophone Canadian artists selected by an independent committee.
To enable artists to explore their full creative potential, the entire space is transformed according to their project.
All year round, contemporary art and especially media arts are celebrated in French in this space dedicated to them at 401 Richmond.
