Sophie Dumesny
Sophie Dumesny is a multidisciplinary artist who likes to experiment with all types of media. Her curiosity and spirit of adventure guides her in her artistic exploration. Media art has a place of predilection in her art; she has been passionate about cinema since her childhood.
Sophie wrote her first stories for her friends in secondary school. Years later, she left the countryside of her childhood to learn the craft of cinematography in the north of France. There she descovered what she had always missed: a community passionate about stories and cinema.
Through collaboration, she directed her first video and short film projects. Passionate about narration, it is with the desire of transmitting ideas and emotions in mind that Sophie made her first films.
A few years ago, in searching for her identity, Sophie immigrated to Toronto. It is in Canada that she discovered and developed a feminist orientation in her cinema. Ontario saw her grow into the artist that she is today: queer, feministe and a Kombucha addict.
Extremely active in the francophone community in Ontario, she is a part of the Committee of Programmation at Le Labo. She is equally a member of the FRIC (Front des réalisateurs indépendants du Canada).
She is currently developing her first feature documentary La Censure du Poil which explores the taboos surrounding female hair, thanks to the grant received from the Canada Arts Council.
With a strong commitment to human rights and gender equality, it is through these projects that Sophie wishes to have an impact on her time. She firmly believes in the importance of narration as a catalyst for change in culture.
