This workshop is intended to provide artists with an introduction to preserving vidéo and photographic media. Participants will learn about preservation standards, terminlogy, resources and archival best practices. The session will focus on how artists can care for their own artwork at home and in the studio.

Workshop Participants will learn:
– About the construction of video and photographic media (anolague and digital)
– How to identify deterioration and inherent instabilities
– The qualities of good and bad storage environments
– Media specific storage and handling techniques
– Best practices for organization and labeling
– Where to locate archival supplies and conservation specialists

Workshop’s plan:
1. Introduction to archiving: what is preservation and why is it important?
2. How media is constructed, and why it matters
3. The storage environment: temperature, humidity and packing materials
4. How to store and handle videotape
5. How to store and handle photographs
6. How to store and handle digital video and photographs
7. How to organize and label your work
8. Locating archival suppliers and specialists

KRISTIE MACDONALD
Kristie MacDonald is an archivist and artist based in Toronto, Ontario. As an archival consultant she specializes in the areas of perseveration and collections management. She holds a BFA from York University specializing in Visual Arts, and an MI from the University of Toronto specializing in Archives and Records Management. Kristie’s research and writing is currently focused on media art preservation and artist-run centre archives. She has worked with arts organizations across the country including Vtape, CARFAC Ontario, SAW Video, Video Pool, Grunt Gallrey, and VIVO Media Arts Centre.
