HDR Workshop (High Dynamic Range)

An HDR (High Dynamic Range) photograph is an image consisting of multiple photos of the same scene, each with a different light value, which allows for a more varied tonal range. These images are rich in information and can produce dramatic effects. Armed with DSLR digital cameras, participants will select a scene to be photographed. The images will then be merged on Photoshop and reworked.

Age group: secondary, post-secondary and adult. Can be modified as needed.

Instructor: Geneviève Thauvette (Artist Educator at the Royal Conservatory)

Equipment to be provided by the school:

  • Classroom
  • Video projector (can be provided by Le Labo)
  • Digital camera (DSLR) (can be provided by Le Labo),
  • Computers with Photoshop CC software (free trial version available for download).

Length of workshop: 3 hours (half-day)

Contemporary vanitas: creating a still life in the studio

Memento mori « remember that you will die! » The vanitas are still lifes designed to remind us of that saying. In classical painting, they are expressed in the subtlety of symbolic language. Photographed during the Victorian era, we find a rather eccentric performance in the post-mortem portrait. Both forms illustrate for us a specific psychological portrait of their time.

How can we interpret this theme in our contemporary world?

Several examples of vanitas and post-mortem pictures will be revealed and discussed in groups. Participants will then choose their own way of photographing a contemporary vanita (period of reflection and group exercise – sketch – shooting). The images will then be reworked in Photoshop for a refined and more professional result. Everything will be exposed on the projector at the end of the workshop (mini-exhibition – optional)
