Habibata Ouarme is an emerging filmmaker with a unique point of view. Originally from Ivory Coast, she has made Canada her home and has been active in supporting issues dear to her heart. She is currently supporting the release of her first feature documentary film produced by the NFB, Koromousso, which she co-wrote, co-directed and appears in. Koromousso (Big Sister) tackles the issue of Female Genital Mutilation and premiered at the 2023 Human Rights Watch Film Festival in Toronto. The film has been selected for international festivals in the UK, New York and soon in Morocco. She has received Telefilm Canada financing for her next project, 1001 Crowns for my Head, a historic and cultural exploration of African and Afro-descendant hairstyles. She serves on the executive board of RAFIQ, a Montreal-based, non-profit organization devoted to helping immigrant, racially diverse women.
