Several actions converge within the Padejo concept to result in an installation that confronts the traditional technique of frottage with its reinterpretation through the prism of video.

During sampling excursions at The Distillery in Toronto, the three artists recorded the details of stones, beams, and various objects damaged by use and time onto soft supports. Their act of rubbing, which resembles a literal transcription and a visual recording, nonetheless traces a path dominated by accident. The large “rubbed” papers, witnesses to exploratory outings, recall topographic maps or aerial photographs of the earth seen from above. When affixed to the external faces of the cubic structure that defines the installation, these monochrome markings invite an initial reading related to overflight and surface scanning. The memory of the visited sites is expressed through the wear, polish, and texture that mark the paper, giving it the relief of an impressed plate. The process utilized by the artists, well known to enthusiasts of rubbings, is further clarified by a video projected at the back of the installation structure. By directing their gaze toward the screen placed below, the visitor adopts the perspective of one flying over the territory. The frontal vision of the large drawings suspended outside the block gives way to this other relationship of high-angle observation, where the monumental scale is reversed to become the intimate observation of an incursion into the world of things. Just as space probes send thousands of images of strange configurations back to terrestrial wave receivers, the Padejo collective’s exploration of a city neighborhood can also deliver observations transmitted through the more local means of drawing and video. One need only position the gaze and adjust the viewing angle to capture a fragment of the universe on a reduced scale. — Marie-Jeanne Musiol

The Padejo collective confronts the technique of frottage with video in an installation sensitive to the memory of places.

[179
post-3963","evenements","type-evenements","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","type-of-installation
["GET
