\nT<\/strong>he continual occupation of a territory is enriched by multiple memories. Such is the case with\u00a0Toronto\u2019.\u00a0 <\/em>Composed of several strata of multiple spirit locations, the First Nations continue to dream and create art about it.<\/p>\n

T<\/strong>his sizeable area of the city, also known asthe place \u00ab\u00a0where trees\u00a0stand in the water\u00a0\u00bb, remains a site for portages and sharing\u00a0that also encompasses\u00a0the powerful ecosystems of\u00a0the Wendat (Hurons), the Haudenosaunee, the Mississaugas, the Francophones, the Anglophones and all those people along with their descendants, that continue to flock\u00a0here.<\/p>\n

P<\/b>rovided that this\u00a0includes Great Lake Ontario\u00a0with its mirrored reflections\u00a0in the city’s skyscrapers\u00a0as much it does\u00a0the thunderous spilling of\u00a0fresh water\u00a0from Niagara Falls\u00a0and the vast networks of rivers that siphon themselves through the plains and to which are grafted many\u00a0channels of subways, streetcars, bikeways and pedestrian paths.<\/p>\n

D<\/strong>espite\u00a0the\u00a0prominence of cement and glass and of steel and electrification, the city site was once a vast expanse of land that was the dominion of the Three Sisters (corn, squash and beans) and of tobacco. Along with its trees and green spaces, this natural vitality is fundamental to Toronto’<\/em>s being. Even still, a fragility remains as the natural spaces continue to be susceptible to the ravages of strong winds, to spontaneous actions like overflowing rivers and even more so, to the joint civic\u00a0impact that moves through and surrounds this place.<\/p>\n

T<\/strong>hese are the various elements that lend\u00a0their force to the works created in trialogue between the Abenaki artist\u00a0Simon M. Benedict<\/strong>, and Ilnu artist Sonia Robertson<\/strong>\u00a0and Wendat curator Guy Sioui Durand.<\/strong> They have been invited by Barbara Gilbert<\/strong> and her team at Le Labo<\/strong>, the only Francophone artist run centre in the city, along with the participation of the YYZ Artists’ Outlet<\/strong> and\u00a0will be a part of the\u00a0ImagineNATIVE Art Crawl <\/strong>that will take place\u00a0throughout the\u00a0401 Richmond St. W.<\/strong> building.<\/p>\n

N<\/strong>ot solitary but in solidarity, not\u00a0two parallel paths but the same path, we therefore present\u00a0Toronto\u2019. Trialogue,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>an Indigenous exhibition and artist residency.<\/p>\n

ABOUT THE ARTISTS AND THE CURATOR<\/strong><\/p>\n

Simon M. Benedict<\/h3>\n

\"03<\/p>\n

Based in Toronto, Simon M. Benedict<\/strong> is an artist working with video, sound, performance, and photo. He repurposes existing audiovisual material and archival documents to explore our relationship to various fictional and historical narrative forms, and their impact on our reading of unmediated reality.<\/p>\n

Simon M. Benedict holds an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Guelph (2016) and a BFA with major in photography from Concordia University, in Montreal (2011). His work has been exhibited in Canada, Europe, and the United States, including recently at VU (Quebec City, 2018), Dazibao (Montreal, 2018), NRW-Forum D\u00fcsseldorf (2018), Noble Space (Toronto, 2017), and Pushmi Pullyu (Toronto, 2017). He has participated in residencies at Le Labo, the National Film Board, Artscape Gibraltar Point, the Banff Centre, and Centre Skol. He has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council.<\/p>\n

Sonia Robertson<\/h3>\n

Sonia Robertson<\/strong> is an Ilnu artist from Mashteuiatsh who, after completing at DEC in photography\u00a0went on to complete a\u00a0bachelors in interdisciplinary art from the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec in Chicoutimi. She has equally following a few complimentary studies in techniques such as Butoh, working with raw materials, dance perfomance, and poetry to name a few. She recently completed a Masters in Art Therapy from the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec en Abitibi-T\u00e9miscamingue\u00a0.<\/p>\n

Installation, performance art, dance, writing, storytelling and explorations of sound and image are central to her artistic practice. Her work has been exhibition in her community, across Quebec and Canada in addition to exhibitions in France, Ha\u00efti, Mexico and Japan.<\/p>\n

Guy Sioui Durand<\/h3>\n

Guy Sioui Durand<\/strong> is a Wendat (Huron) based in Wendake, Qu\u00e9bec, Canada. He is a sociologist (Ph.D), art critic, independant curator, and performer (spoken words). He is specialised in contemporary Aboriginal art and contemporary art.<\/p>\n
