Once Upon a Time in the Orient

Once Upon a Time in the Orient

Nadia Seboussi’s “Once Upon a Time in the Orient” juxtaposes stereotypical images of a fantasized Orient. The work addresses the representation of Arab or so-called Oriental women, by revisiting Egyptian cinema’s golden age and the role women played in it. The exhibition also offers a critical look at the image the West has attributed to these figures, balancing homage, cinematic memory, and a questioning of cultural constructs.
