Djamilia

Djamilia

“Djamilia” by Aminatou Echard traces the influence of Chingiz Aitmatov’s novel through the voices of women from Kyrgyzstan. Shot on Super 8, the film composes portraits of women of all ages in intimate settings and Kyrgyz landscapes. Each reflects on the traumas associated with early marriage and bride kidnapping. The film invites women to speak about their lives, their role in society, and their expectations for change.
