I’m calling home – Labo nordique SAW
As part of the opening of 6 degrés, territoires de narration, Le Labo, in partnership with the Association des Groupes en Arts Visuels Francophones (AGAVF), invites you to a performance-discussion with artist Geronimo Inutiq and the five first artists behind the epistolary feminist project Julie Lassonde, Sophie Dumesny, Éveline Boudreau, Noémie Roy and Laura Demers, based on the installation J’appelle chez nous / I’m calling home.
An invitation to listen to other intimate accounts of identity, and to open up a safe space for mutual understanding. This radio and media performance in French, English and Inuktitut encourages us to reflect on ourselves, to contemplate others, and to touch our sense of sharing, thus contributing to an awareness of a more positive future.
The evening continues with a DJ set featuring DJ Muzikfatale and artist Geronimo.
👉 About the performance « I’m calling home » :
During a residency at the Saw Nordic Lab in 2020, the artist conceived the idea of developing a virtual radio station that broadcasts a community program in three languages (English, French, and Inuktitut) to be presented as a multimedia installation. The concept of recreating the interior of a Nordic house with one or more « virtual windows » that reveal an Arctic scene, along with a radio program playing in the background, was developed with an artistic exploration grant from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2021. The first iteration was presented in Montreal at the Centre Canadien d’Architecture in 2022. Concurrently, the partnership with the AGAVF led to a new adaptation of the project into a mobile and iterative community presentation developed in collaboration with organizations from various regions across the country. The final mobile presentation will stop in Ottawa as part of the Zones Théâtrales to continue discussions and develop discourse on how we express the idea of what we consider home.
👉 About the artist Geronimo Inutiq :
With experience in electronic music production as well as performance, film, video, digital images, and multimedia installation, Geronimo Inutiq has performed and exhibited his music and artwork across the country in various installations and prestigious venues. As a cultural worker, he has been involved in important social dialogues. Particularly known for his innovative work remixing Inuit music and remixing archival film footage, Geronimo Inutiq continues to offer a unique perspective through his creative pursuits.
The Association des Groupes en Arts Visuels Francophones (AGAVF), in partnership with the Saw Centre’s Nordic Lab, is proud to lead the initiative « Creating Connections between Communities through Contemporary Art. » The project unfolded over two years and involved members of the AGAVF network and the Alliance des Radios Communautaires du Canada (ARC) in six cities/regions with connections to Indigenous communities, namely Whitehorse, Winnipeg, Moncton, Sudbury, Ottawa, and Toronto. This initiative is funded by the project component of the Official Languages Support Program (OLSP) from Canadian Heritage.
