In partnership with REEL Canada

We are pleased to invite you to a screening of the film The Saddest Music in the World by Guy Maddin for Canadian Film Day. Under the theme « movies that AI could never make », we bring you this deliciously bizarre film from 2003, which imitates the aesthetic of cinema of the 20s and 30s, halfway between silent film and comedy Hollywood musical. Far from simply being a parody of old films, The Saddest Music in the World offers a unique cinematic experience.

Guy Maddin was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Herdis Maddin (a hairdresser) and Charles “Chas” Maddin (a grain office employee and general manager of the Maroons, a Winnipeg hockey team). Maddin studied economics at the University of Winnipeg, working as a bank manager, house painter and photographic archivist before becoming a filmmaker. Maddin produced his first film in 1985, and since then, his unique way of reinterpreting and modernizing the conventions of silent cinema, as well as his international recognition, have made him one of Canada’s most celebrated directors. In 2003, Maddin also expanded his career to become an author and artist.
